What does Jen’s Hens provide?

We provide everything to make your hen rental enjoyable and fuss-free. This incudes 2 laying hens, a chicken coop and attached run, feed for the initial rental period, feed and water dispensers and bedding. We set everything up so you don’t have to lift a finger. Most importantly we provide all instructions to ensure you’re comfortable welcoming the newest members of your family. Brisbane City Council also requires a permit to keep hens which we will organise for you. The great part - if you decide to keep hens after your experience with Jen’s Hens, you already have your permit sorted!

How long is the rental period?

Our initial rental period is 4 weeks, with the option to extend! We believe this allows you to fully decide is keeping hens is right for you. It also works well with school holidays so the kids can enjoy watching the hens during the day, collecting the eggs and screen-free fun. After the 4 weeks you can decide buy your package outright, continue renting for a small monthly free or end the rental. Further details are listed in the Terms and Conditions.

How big does my yard need to be?

Our coops with attached runs are 2.65 metres long by 0.84 metres wide. This provides enough room for your hens to happily forage and a safe space for them to play, rest and nest. We require a flat area in your yard where the coop can be positioned at least one metre from a boundary fence. For detailed information on our coops please see the ‘Our Coops’ page.

What feed do you provide?

Good feed makes for happy hens. That’s why we only use a high-quality feed packed with essential nutrients. The feed is balanced with 17% protein, is rich in essential amino acids that are key to enhancing egg size and includes natural ingredients such as paprika to give rich, vibrant yolks. Put simply, it’s the perfect blend of wholesome goodness that your hens will love.

If requested, Jen’s Hens can also provide certified organic, gluten-free, soy-free feed to cater for food sensitive households.

How many eggs will I get?

Our hens are ready to lay and each hen typically lays 5-7 eggs a week.  No rooster required!

Will my hens make noise and mess?

Your hens will make some noise, but not crow like a rooster. Our coops have an attached run to keep your hens content and your yard mess-free. If you don’t have other pets and choose to let your hens free-range in the yard (while supervised), they’ll scratch in the ground and be natural pest controllers!

What happens if a hen gets sick or dies?

We’re passionate about keeping our hens healthy. During the rental period, we provide full support for you and your hens.  It’s rare, but just like us hens can become sick. In this unlikely event call us and we’ll be able to help. If predators affect your hens, we’ll happily replace them as long as the issue isn't due to neglect.

Can I leave my hens for a few days?

Our hens are quite happy to be left alone for a weekend, provided they have enough food and water.  You’ll have a few eggs to greet you when you return! Beyond two days, please ensure you have someone reliable to check on the hens, top up their food and water and collect the eggs.
